Putting Your Heart on Your Sleeve

April 23, 2009

mirage290.jpgNot every “bloke” is keen to put their heart on their sleeve, let alone doing so by writing a poem about how he feels. It’s not something we do well  – as a rule. So a feather could have knocked me down when one of my colleagues let me read (and now publish) the poem below. What is especially interesting was that he wrote it in response to the “Push the Limit” video on the right hand side of this page. He was responding to the words of the backing track, as much as to the images. “Bring me to Life” by Evanescence is a powerful song which arguably refers to an appeal to Jesus (that is another debate altogether but the words certainly fit that context, and it works for me). Damien’s poem below, words to the song below that.

Tears fill my eyes….a mind grasps at what one wishes to be, yet there are so many things to be done and so many for who I exist. My path is the path that has been chosen for me and whilst I yearn for such an alternate existence, I must understand that the love and passion I feel for it is intensified by the fact that I cannot live it, at least in this life for as we know, we seek to be there, but when there, there becomes here, and the crystallisation of the what we expect is somewhat different with full cognition of what we see now, and for [there] can only be achieved through years of a differing path from which expectations and cognition would be entirely different than that we perceive now. Or is it that I recognise and feel what I felt in a past life? I must enjoy the tingling that rages up my spine as the music fiercely pumps out and makes tangible, palpable my energy and emotion that wants and feels, with each turn, with each G, with each role my mind screams, this is me…see me…feel what I feel, I smell the cockpit, I master its myriad of confusion to bring about gracefulness, power, wonder and awe…….. this is omnipotence! Could it be that we aspire to be Gods, or is it that we seek to be Gods servants and this in our mind is the pinnacle of such an ideal? At the end of such hypothesis one can only do what is right…….BREAK LEFT!

Bring me to Life by Evanescence

How can you see into my eyes like open doors
Leading you down to my core
Where I’ve become so numb without a soul
My spirit’s sleeping somewhere cold
Until you find it there and
Lead it back home

(Wake me up) Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up) Wake me up inside
(Save me) Call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up) Bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up) Before I come undone
(Save me) Save me from the nothing I’ve become

Now that I know what I’m without
You can’t just leave me
Breathe into me and make me real
Bring me to life

Bring me to life
(I’ve been living a lie, there’s nothing inside)
Bring me to life
Frozen inside without your touch
Without your love
Darling, only you are the life among the dead.

All the time I can’t believe I couldn’t see
Kept in the dark but you were there in front of me

I’ve been sleeping a thousand years it seems
Got to open my eyes to everything

Without a thought without a voice without a soul
(Don’t let me die here)
(There must be something more)

Bring me to life

(Bring me to life)
I’ve been living a lie, there’s nothing in side
(Bring me to life)
