South Coast track, Tasmania
Camped at Low Camp, Ironbound Range.
900m up and not quite 900m down. Descent like coming down a steep ladder covered in grease.
Knackered.
0613 departure after discovering at 0500 our site was flooding.
Slept despite listening to wind in the trees and surrounded by lots of deadfall and multiple signs warning about same.
Slept despite the the wind, though that was eventually replaced by a relentless but steady rain.
Made a good time to the top of Ironbound Range. But the descent was awful. Straight down what is effectively a stream bed covered in moss and bottoms with interlaced small greasy roots. Deep mud.
The best worst track I have ever been on I think.
Decided that we didn’t want to risk trying to get to Deadman’s Bay in the dark if the track continued to be this bad. So camp it is at Low Camp.
Dodgy site but we have made the best of a bad thing. Sound of rushing stream just below us easily confused for wind in the beech canopy. Praying for no wind (except that which might dry the towels hanging outside) and no rain – that high is due over us about now.
In bed with some vegetable curry in the tank.
Good night.
